Can Chemicals Think? Why Naturalism Destroys Its Own Logic
Introduction
If philosophical materialism is true, every thought, conviction, and calculation you experience is ultimately reduced to electro-chemical reactions governed entirely by the non-rational laws of physics. But here lies the foundational paradox of the naturalist worldview: if your mind is merely a byproduct of unguided, physical processes, what rational justification do you have to trust that those physical processes produce truth? By reducing human rationality to mindless chemistry, naturalism pulls the rug out from under its own ability to argue, evaluate, and conclude anything at all.
Consider shaking a box of Scrabble tiles until letters spill onto the floor. If they happen to arrange themselves into a legible sentence—say, "It is raining outside"—you might recognize the letters, but you would never rely on that arrangement as a verified weather report. The sequence was dictated by friction, gravity, and kinetic impact, not by an awareness of the weather outside.
In the exact same way, if the neural firing in our brains is dictated strictly by physical laws and blind evolutionary pressure. Relying on our brains to discover transcendent truths about reality is no different than trusting randomly scattered Scrabble tiles to dictate philosophy.
The Core Syllogism
Premise 1: If naturalism/materialism is true, all mental states (beliefs, judgments, inferences) are entirely determined by non-rational physical causes (neurochemistry, physics, evolutionary wiring).
Premise 2: If mental states are entirely determined by non-rational physical causes, no belief is held on the basis of rational insight or objective logical grounding.
Premise 3: A belief held without rational insight or logical grounding cannot claim rational justification.
Conclusion: Therefore, if naturalism is true, no belief - including the belief in naturalism itself - can be rationally justified.
Survival vs. Truth: Natural selection acts exclusively on adaptive behavior, not metaphysical accuracy. As philosopher Alvin Plantinga famously demonstrated, evolution favors whatever neural wiring helps an organism survive, hunt, and reproduce. If a prehistoric human survived by falsely believing that every rustling bush was a demon rather than the wind, that false belief still preserved his life. Fitness only demands that adaptive actions occur, leaving cognitive reliability completely unguaranteed.
The Gap Between Causes and Reasons: A physical cause (a sodium-potassium pump firing in an axon) is fundamentally different from a logical ground (affirming that A = B and B = C; therefore, A = C). Physical events explain why something happens mechanistically, but they cannot confer logical validity. If naturalism is true, every philosophical conclusion - including atheism itself - is an involuntary physiological reaction, not an objective logical insight.
The Self-Defeating Loop: The materialist attempts to use logical deduction to establish that all thought is merely physical. Yet, if all thought is merely physical, that very deduction loses its authority as a rational act. As C.S. Lewis succinctly put it: "Unless I believe in God, I cannot believe in thought: so I can never use thought to disbelieve in God."
Why Natural Selection Cannot Rescue Reason
Materialists often argue that evolution bridges this gap by selecting for organisms with accurate brains. However, this conflates adaptive behavior with truth-tracking logic:
Evolution operates exclusively on survival and reproduction (fitness). It selects for neural outputs that cause appropriate physical reactions, not for accurate metaphysical insight.
A creature can survive equally well on falsehoods, provided the falsehood triggers the right physical response (e.g., fleeing a harmless rustle because it falsely believes a demon is there rather than a gust of wind).
Even if evolution wires our brains to recognize basic immediate threats, it provides zero warrant for trusting our cognitive faculties when doing abstract philosophy, theoretical physics, or evaluating ultimate worldviews.
The Inescapable Self-Defeat
The naturalist arrives at materialism by constructing an argument: presenting evidence, evaluating premises, and inferring a conclusion.
Yet, if their conclusion is correct, the very process of formulating that argument was merely an involuntary cascade of physical reactions. The naturalist uses the authority of reason to dethrone reason, creating an inescapable epistemic circle.
The Theistic Grounding
Rationality requires that mind and reason are fundamental to the cosmos, not a freak accident of unguided particles. In a theistic framework:
Objective logic and rationality originate in the supreme Mind (the Logos).
Human beings possess rational faculties designed to apprehend objective truth and understand the universe.
Reason is not an illusion generated by fizzing chemistry; it is a direct window into the rational order of reality.
