Naturalism, Intelligent Design, and a First Cause walk into a bar....

The bartender looks up and says, "What'll it be?"

Naturalism slams a ten-dollar bill on the counter and says, "Give me a beer. Everything in this room can be reduced to chemical reactions, fluid dynamics, and the transfer of paper currency."

Intelligent Design shakes its head and says, "Look at that tap system - the precise pressure, the perfectly calibrated nitrogen-to-CO₂ ratio, the exact tilt of the glass. There is no way a pour that good could happen without conscious intent. I'll have whatever the Master Brewer made."

The First Cause just sits there calmly, doesn't order a drink, and doesn't pull out any money.

The bartender asks, "Hey buddy, aren't you going to buy a drink?"

The First Cause smiles and says, "I don't need to. I'm just here to make sure someone pays the first tab so the rest of you can exist to drink at all."

The bartender sighs, looks at the three of them, and says, "Great. So who's paying for the tip, or do we need an Inference to the Best Explanation just to settle the bill?"

From the Origin of the Universe to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

From Absolute Origin to Historical Incarnation:
A Unified Cumulative Argument from
Classical Natural Theology to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

The historical intellectual divide between the abstract God of philosophical natural theology - the uncaused First Cause, necessary ground of being, and cosmic fine-tuner - and the personal, incarnate deity of Christian theology presents a foundational epistemological challenge. Bridging this divide requires constructing a single, unified cumulative argument using the framework of Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE). This analytical progression unfolds across two distinct, logically linked phases: first, a metaphysical phase that deduces the necessary characteristics of the First Cause to construct an unambiguous classical monotheistic profile; and second, an empirical phase that interrogates historical reality to identify where this transcendent mind entered human history in the person of Jesus Christ.

Phase I: The Metaphysical Profile of the First Cause and Ultimate Designer

Cosmological Finitude and Causal Necessity

The foundational premise of cosmological natural theology rests upon the demonstration that the physical universe is temporally finite and causally dependent. The Kalām Cosmological Argument articulates this necessity through a valid syllogistic framework proposing that whatever begins to exist has a cause, the universe began to exist, and therefore the universe possesses an external cause.

The first premise is grounded in the Parmenidean metaphysical principle ex nihilo nihil fit (out of nothing, nothing comes). To assert that an entity can come into existence without any material or efficient cause is to abandon the foundation of rational inquiry. Empirical experience and scientific methodology continuously verify that physical events possess sufficient causal conditions, while the negation of this premise leads to the absurd conclusion that anything and everything could pop into existence uncaused out of non-being.

The second premise - that the universe began to exist - is supported by both deductive philosophical arguments and inductive scientific data. Philosophically, the impossibility of an actual infinite existing in the real world demonstrates that the temporal series of past events must be finite. As illustrated by Hilbert’s Paradox of the Grand Hotel, positing an actual infinite within physical reality leads to self-contradictory absurdities. Furthermore, an actual infinite cannot be traversed by successive addition; because the present moment has arrived, the series of prior temporal events cannot be past-infinite.

Modern physical cosmology corroborates this philosophical deduction. The Borde-Guth-Vilenkin (BGV) theorem proves that any spacetime geometry possessing an average cosmic expansion rate [Hav > 0] cannot be extended to past infinity but must reach a boundary in the finite past. This theorem holds independently of the physical descriptions of early-universe energy conditions. While theoretical physics acknowledges that quantum gravity dominates at the Planck epoch, any non-classical quantum state preceding classical spacetime must itself possess a temporal beginning, preventing an eternal past regress. Proposed exceptions to the BGV boundary - such as emergent or bounce cosmologies - require hyper-fine-tuned initial conditions set in an acausal manner across causally disconnected regions, reintroducing fine-tuning at a deeper level.

Crucially, the Kalām argument relies epistemologically upon an A-theory (presentist) model of time, wherein temporal becoming is real, the past is no longer actual, and the future is not yet realized. On a B-theory (block universe) model, the universe exists tenselessly as a four-dimensional manifold finitely extended in the "earlier than" direction, altering the classical dynamic of coming into being. Under presentism, however, the finite origin of spacetime mandates an extrinsic efficient cause that brings the universe into actual existence ex nihilo.

Deduction of Core Metaphysical Attributes

Because the universe represents the origin of all physical matter, energy, space, and time, the cause of the universe must transcend these domains entirely. Logical analysis of this transcendent cause reveals a set of necessary properties that delineate a precise metaphysical profile.

Because the cause produced physical space and matter ex nihilo, it cannot itself be composed of physical matter or restricted by spatial dimensions, demonstrating that it must be spaceless and immaterial. Having created the temporal framework alongside space-time, the cause exists outside the flow of physical time in a timeless state prior to creation, acquiring a temporal relation only upon initiating the first event. Bringing the totality of physical reality - hundreds of billions of galaxies, fundamental forces, and dark matter - into existence out of absolute non-being requires causal power that is practically infinite, establishing omnipotence. Furthermore, applying Ockham’s Razor indicates that a single omnipotent cause is sufficient to account for cosmological fine-tuning and the origin of spacetime, establishing singularity and monotheism.

The Pivot to Personal Agency and Volition

The transition from an impersonal, mechanical force to a personal Being constitutes the decisive pivot in natural theology. This inference rests upon two crucial logical necessities: the resolution of timeless causality and the presence of specified digital information in nature.

If the First Cause were an impersonal, deterministic set of necessary and sufficient mechanical conditions, the effect would be eternally coexistent with the cause. For instance, if the cause of ice formation is a temperature below 0 degrees Celsius, then whenever the temperature is timelessly below 0 degrees Celsius, the ice must timelessly exist. If the cause of the universe exists timelessly and mechanically, the universe itself would be past-eternal, contradicting cosmological finitude. The only logical mechanism for a timeless cause to produce a temporal effect with a definitive beginning (t = 0) is if the cause possesses volition. This is the capacity of a personal agent to freely choose to initiate an action from an uncaused, timeless state.

This personal attribution is further corroborated by information theory and biological teleology. The biological cell relies fundamentally on DNA, which operates as a digital information storage system using four-character chemical syntax. This information is not merely ordered (like a repeating crystal lattice) but specified and functional (like a computer program or written literature). Uniform empirical experience establishes that complex, specified, functional information originates exclusively from conscious, intelligent minds. Physical forces and random chemical self-organization can generate physical order, but they never produce functional digital code. Under an Inference to the Best Explanation framework, inferring a transcendent Mind behind biological information matches established background knowledge regarding cause-and-effect relationships.

Moral and Teleological Attributes: Benevolence and Divine Communication

Moving beyond power and intelligence, natural theology establishes divine benevolence through the structural fine-tuning of the cosmos. The physical constants of the universe - such as the cosmological constant, the strong nuclear force, and the gravitational coupling constant - are balanced within exceedingly narrow operational tolerances. Had these parameters varied by infinitesimal fractions, the universe would have collapsed into a black hole state or expanded too rapidly for stars, planets, and chemistry to form.

This precise setup demonstrates deliberate teleological intention. The intentional setup of a cosmos tailored to foster conscious, personal life demonstrates a fundamental orientation toward goodness. By endowing conscious creatures with the capacity for moral reasoning, rational reflection, love, and aesthetic appreciation, the Creator reveals that personal life carries intrinsic value.

From personal agency and benevolence flows the rational expectation of divine communication. Personal agents are inherently ordered toward relational communication; an agent that creates other personal agents capable of communion would not maintain perpetual, absolute silence. Endowing creatures with intellect and the capacity to ask ultimate questions implies a corresponding provision of answers. Creating conscious beings capable of seeking truth while permanently withholding the source of that truth would contradict the purposeful order seen in natural law. Furthermore, a benevolent Creator who bestows moral free agency naturally provides objective moral grounding and clarity regarding human destiny, rather than leaving personal creatures in epistemic isolation.

Comparative Elimination of Alternative Worldviews

The metaphysical profile established by Phase I narrows the pool of viable worldviews. The deductive framework systematically eliminates pantheism, deism, polytheism, and non-theistic philosophies.

Worldview ReligionCosmological Origin (t=0)Immaterial TranscendencePersonal Agency & VolitionExplanatory Scope (DNA & Fine-Tuning)Antecedent Expectation of Revelation
Naturalism MaterialismFails (Requires uncaused physical beginning)Fails (Denies non-material reality)Fails (Reduces mind to physical matter)Fails (Relies on chance or multiverse)Inapplicable (No divine entity exists)

DeismValidates (First Cause admitted)Validates (Transcendent creator)Partial (Acknowledges design, denies care)Partial (explains origin, ignores engagement)Fails (Assumes perpetual divine silence)
ZoroastrianismFails (cosmic dualism lacks a single cause)Partial (Ahura Mazda vs. Angra Mainyu)Validates (Personal agent)Fails (Dualism compromises omnipotence)Partial (Texts recorded post-9th Century AD)
Classical MonotheismValidates (Ex nihilo creation)Validates (spaceless, timeless, immaterial)Validates (volitional, intelligent agent)Validates (unifies cosmology & biology)Validates (Relational symmetry & moral care)

Phase I completes its task by arriving strictly at Classical Monotheism. The "God of the philosophers" is a single, eternal, spaceless, immaterial, omnipotent, personal, and benevolent Creator who possesses the antecedent intention to communicate with creation.

Phase II: The Historical Incarnation and Empirical Verification

The Epistemological Antecedent and Historical Testability

While metaphysics deduces the necessity of a benevolent, communicative Creator, philosophy alone cannot identify the specific historical vector of that revelation. The investigation must transition from abstract metaphysical deduction to historical analysis.

If the Creator entered human history, such an event must leave verifiable empirical footprints within the historical record. Throughout history, numerous figures have claimed to deliver messages from God, but Jesus of Nazareth stands unique in making radical, explicit claims to be the physical incarnation of the ultimate Creator. He assumed divine prerogatives - forgiving sins independently, revising divine law, claiming authority over life and death, and stating explicitly, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).

To substantiate these claims, Jesus offered a specific, empirical sign: his execution and resurrection from the dead. The truth of Christianity - and the bridging of philosophy to history - rests entirely on whether this event occurred.

The Minimal Facts Matrix

To evaluate the resurrection claim objectively, modern historiography employs the Minimal Facts Approach. This methodology isolates data points that meet two rigorous criteria: they are supported by strong, independent historical data, and they are granted as historical facts by the vast majority of critical, secular, skeptical, Jewish, and Christian historians.

  • The first fact is Jesus's death by Roman crucifixion under Pontius Pilate. The execution was carried out publicly, ensuring death through asphyxiation and trauma, making survival impossible.
  • The second fact is the discovery of the empty tomb. A few days after his burial, Jesus's tomb was found empty by a group of his female followers. Historically, the early Christian movement could never have started in Jerusalem—where Jesus was publicly executed—if the Roman or Jewish authorities could have produced his decaying body from the tomb. Furthermore, ancient Jewish legal custom did not regard female testimony as legally binding; had the early church fabricated the narrative, they would have cited prominent male leaders as the primary discoverers.
  • The third fact comprises the post-mortem appearances. Multiple individuals, small groups, and large gatherings sincerely believed they saw, spoke with, ate with, and interacted with Jesus alive after his death across diverse geographical settings.
  • The fourth fact is the sincere martyrdom of the primary disciples. The disciples underwent radical psychological transformations, enduring severe persecution, poverty, torture, and execution for proclaiming the physical resurrection. While individuals may die for false beliefs they sincerely assume to be true, no group willingly dies for a hoax they know they fabricated.
  • The fifth fact is the sudden conversion of hostile skeptics. James, the brother of Jesus, was an active skeptic during Jesus's life but converted immediately following a post-mortem encounter, becoming a key Jerusalem church leader until his martyrdom. Similarly, Saul of Tarsus (Paul), a violent persecutor of the early church, underwent an immediate conversion after experiencing an appearance of the risen Christ, surrendering elite status to become Christianity's primary missionary.

Historiographical Evaluation via C. Behan McCullagh’s Criteria

To determine the best explanation for this Minimal Facts matrix, historians utilize the standard criteria for justifying historical descriptions established by philosopher C. Behan McCullagh. He argues that while historical accounts may not perfectly mirror the past in a naïve sense, historians can still arrive at objective, warranted truths through rigorous inference to the best explanation, evidence correlation, and logical criteria.

C. Behan McCullagh's  Seven Criteria for Testing a Historical Hypothesis
  • Empirical Implication: The hypothesis, combined with other true statements, must imply further statements that describe present, observable data.
  • Explanatory Scope: The hypothesis must explain a greater variety of observable data (imply a wider range of observation statements) than any rival hypothesis.
  • Explanatory Power: The hypothesis must make the observed data more probable than competing explanations do.
  • Plausibility: The hypothesis must fit better with a wider variety of currently accepted truths, and its negation must conflict with fewer accepted beliefs.
  • Less Ad Hoc: The hypothesis must rely on fewer new, unsupported suppositions about the past that are not already implied by existing knowledge.
  • Fewer Conflicts: The hypothesis must be disconfirmed by fewer accepted beliefs than any incompatible alternative.
  • Superiority Margin: The hypothesis must so clearly exceed its rivals across these tests that there is little chance a competing idea will surpass it after further research.

Evaluating rival naturalistic hypotheses against McCullagh's criteria reveals significant explanatory
deficiencies.

The Conspiracy Theory - which posits that the disciples stole the body and fabricated the resurrection - fails in explanatory power. It cannot account for the psychological transformation of the disciples or their willingness to face gruesome execution without confessing a fraud. Conspiracies unravel under threat of torture, and assuming twelve individuals maintained a hoax through death violates general historical knowledge regarding human behavior. Furthermore, it completely fails to explain the independent conversion of hostile skeptics like Paul.

The Hallucination Theory suggests that post-mortem appearances were subjective psychological hallucinations. This hypothesis suffers from narrow explanatory scope because it says nothing about the empty tomb, requiring a secondary, ad hoc hypothesis to account for the missing body. Furthermore, it is disconfirmed by accepted psychological science, which demonstrates that hallucinations are subjective mental events that cannot be experienced collectively by groups across multiple settings.

The Apparent Death or Swoon Theory proposes that Jesus survived the crucifixion, revived inside the cool tomb, escaped his burial wrappings, moved a heavy stone, overcame Roman guards, and convinced his disciples he was the glorified Lord of life. This hypothesis fails miserably in plausibility and is disconfirmed by modern medical knowledge regarding Roman execution methods and severe traumatic shock. A severely injured man crawling out of a tomb would excite pity and require medical treatment, not convince disciples that he had conquered death.

The Displaced Body and Wrong Tomb hypotheses suggest that Jesus was buried in the wrong location or moved by a gardener, leading the women to a mistaken location. These hypotheses fail in explanatory scope because they explain only the empty tomb while failing to account for the physical appearances, the disciples' radical transformation, or Paul's conversion. Additionally, Jewish or Roman authorities could have easily crushed the movement by retrieving the body from the correct location.

Historical HypothesisExplanatory ScopeExplanatory PowerPlausibilityAd HocnessDisconfirmation by Accepted BeliefsAppraisal
Conspiracy TheoryLow (Ignores conversions)Low (Cannot explain martyrdom)Poor (Conspiracies unravel under torture)High (postulates hidden fraud without data)Disconfirmed (violates human psychological behavior)Rejected
Hallucination TheoryNarrow (Ignores Empty Tomb)Low (Fails on group settings)Low (collective hallucinations unsupported)High (Requires secondary theft hypotheses)Disconfirmed (contradicts clinical psychology)Rejected
Apparent Death (Swoon)Moderate (Covers tomb & appearances)Very Low (Weakened man does not inspire worship)Extremely Low (Crucifixion was fatal)High (Assumes medical miracles without treatment)Disconfirmed (contradicts medical science)Rejected

Bodily ResurrectionComplete (Explains all 5 Minimal Facts)Maximum (Makes all observable data probable)High (Given Phase I Metaphysical Profile)Minimal (Requires a single premise: God acts)Compatible (Consistent with divine action)Preferred Best Explanation

Evaluating the bodily resurrection hypothesis against McCullagh's criteria demonstrates its complete superiority. It possesses broad explanatory scope, accounting for all five Minimal Facts simultaneously. It possesses maximum explanatory power, rendering the empty tomb, appearances, and conversions fully expected. It is non-ad hoc, requiring only a single premise: that the transcendent Creator established in Phase I acted within human history.

While naturalistic scholars argue that resurrections possess low prior plausibility due to uniform physical experience, this objection fails when Phase I has already established the existence of an omnipotent, personal, communicative Creator. Given a transcendent First Cause capable of bringing the entire physical cosmos into existence ex nihilo, raising a human body from the dead represents an uncomplicated act for the Being who spoke the laws of physics into existence.

Gospel Historiography and Eyewitness Reliability

The historical reliability of the New Testament documents corroborates the Minimal Facts framework. The Gospels display specific structural markers of ancient eyewitness historiography.

Richard Bauckham highlights the ancient literary device known as inclusio of eyewitness testimony, wherein a narrative explicitly names its primary eyewitness source at the beginning and end of the text. In the Gospel of Mark, Simon Peter is the first disciple named (Mark 1:16) and among the last mentioned (Mark 16:7), framing the text as Peter’s direct recollections—confirming early second-century testimony from Papias of Hierapolis. Similarly, the Gospel of John explicitly identifies the "beloved disciple" as both a narrative participant and the eyewitness source behind the written record (John 21:24).

Furthermore, the Gospels contain vivid local detail, named minor figures (such as Bartimaeus), and precise geographic cues that align with first-century Palestinian archaeology. Early creedal formulas embedded in Paul’s letters—most notably 1 Corinthians 15:3–8—list the death, burial, resurrection, and appearances of Jesus to groups and individuals. Historians date this tradition to within two to three years of the crucifixion, demonstrating that the resurrection proclamation was not a late legendary development, but the original, eyewitness-grounded foundation of the Christian movement.

Conclusion: Synthesis of the Unbroken Cumulative Argument

The argument from the God of the philosophers to Jesus Christ forms an unbroken chain of logical inferences grounded in cosmology, philosophy, and history.

Cosmology and physics demonstrate that physical spacetime had an absolute beginning, requiring a timeless, spaceless, immaterial, and omnipotent First Cause. Information theory and biological fine-tuning establish that this cause possesses immense intellect and volition, revealing a personal Mind behind natural law. Moral philosophy demonstrates that this personal Creator is inherently benevolent and designed human beings with rational and relational capacity, establishing a clear expectation of divine communication. Comparative analysis eliminates alternative non-theistic, pantheistic, and deistic worldviews, leaving Classical Monotheism as the sole viable framework.

Historical investigation reveals that Jesus of Nazareth claimed to be the physical incarnation of this transcendent Creator, offering his bodily resurrection as the ultimate validation of his divine identity. Applying standard historiographical criteria to the Minimal Facts matrix demonstrates that the bodily resurrection of Jesus is the best explanation of the historical data, fully supported by the metaphysical plausibility established in Phase I.

Through this unified cumulative case, the abstract First Cause of classical natural theology is conclusively identified. The "God of the philosophers" - the transcendent, omnipotent ground of spacetime - is recognized as the personal Creator who entered human history, conquered death, and revealed His face in the person of Jesus Christ.

Reason, Conviction, and the Call to Hear

To follow a rigorous argument from the origin of the cosmos to the resurrection of Christ is an exercise in intellectual discipline. Philosophy, cosmology, and historiography can point the mind toward a compelling conclusion: that the transcendent Creator of the universe is real, personal, and dynamically present in history through Jesus Christ.

Yet, intellectual assent to a well-constructed argument is only the threshold. True engagement with the Gospel requires us to think critically not just as passive evaluators, but as whole persons whose lives, wills, and allegiances are at stake.

In Mark 4:9, after speaking to the crowds, Jesus declares:

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

This phrase is a profound call to active, critical thinking and discernment. In its original context, Jesus was emphasizing that truth is not always absorbed through casual listening; it requires an intentional posture of the heart and mind to truly perceive what is being revealed.

  • To "have ears to hear" means looking past mere logical interest to examine what the reality of Christ actually demands of us.

  • Critical thought does not mean detachment - it means honestly weighing the evidence and allowing valid conclusions to reshape how we live.

If the historical resurrection is the best explanation for the footprint Jesus left in history, then He is far more than a metaphysical First Cause or an abstract "God of the philosophers." He is the living Creator who stepped into human history - and meeting Him requires more than theoretical agreement. It invites us into a deep, personal response: to recognize our need for Him, to turn away from self-reliance in repentance, and to place our ultimate trust in Him through faith.

Thinking critically through the evidence leads us to the door, but "hearing" with an open heart is what allows us to step through - moving from knowing about God as Creator to truly knowing Him as Redeemer.

Objections Answered

Objection A: "Calling creation a 'choice' begs the question."

  • The Counter-Argument: Deductive logic - not an assumption - demands personal agency to solve a temporal puzzle.

  • Refutation:

    • If the First Cause were an eternal, impersonal physical mechanism, its effect would necessarily be co-eternal with the cause (e.g., if water is eternally below 0°C, ice is eternally present). An eternal, deterministic physical mechanism cannot exist eternally without its effect also existing eternally.

    • The only known causal mechanism capable of originating a discrete temporal effect ($t = 0$) from a timeless, state of rest without prior physical antecedents is volitional agency—a conscious mind freely choosing to initiate action.

Objection B: "The universe is hostile to life and 99% of species are extinct."

  • The Counter-Argument: Cosmic fine-tuning refers to the foundational physical laws permitting any life, not local biological extinction rates.

  • Refutation:

    • Fine-tuning arguments do not claim every cubic kilometer of space is hospitable to human survival. Rather, they highlight that fundamental physical constants (e.g., cosmological constant, gravitational coupling, strong nuclear force) are restricted to an extraordinarily narrow band necessary for conscious, personal life to exist anywhere.

    • Malevolence or indifference requires no setup for life - an indifferent creator could allow an empty, chaotic, or immediate black-hole universe. Calibrating physics specifically to permit rational, morally capable creatures points to an intrinsic valuation of conscious personal existence. Biological turnover and extinction occur within the physical law structures required for stable thermodynamics; local physical decay does not negate the intentionality needed to establish the cosmic "hardware" in the first place.

Objection C: "God existing before the universe requires space and time."

  • The Counter-Argument: Equating existence with spatial/temporal physical presence is a category error.

  • Refutation:

    • Abstract entities (like numbers or logic) and immaterial minds do not occupy physical space. "Existing" does not require spatial extension unless one presupposes physicalism—which is precisely what the origin of space-time disproves.

    • Prior to creation, God exists in a timeless (atemporal) state, entering temporal relations only at the moment of initiating t = 0.

Objection D: "DNA and fine-tuning are not evidence of intelligence."

  • The Counter-Argument: Uniform background experience connects complex, specified digital information to the mind.

  • Refutation:

    • DNA operates as a functional digital code (complete with syntax and information storage). Uniform empirical experience consistently demonstrates that complex, specified, functional information always originates from a conscious mind—never unguided physical forces. Inferring a Designer aligns directly with standard background knowledge of cause and effect.

Objection E: "Ockham's Razor doesn't rule out polytheism or other religions like Zoroastrianism/Sikhism."

  • The Counter-Argument: Ockham's Razor eliminates redundant metaphysical entities.

  • Refutation:

    • A single, transcendent, omnipotent personal First Cause is sufficient to account for cosmic origin and fine-tuning. Postulating multiple distinct deities introduces redundant entities without increasing explanatory power.

    • Dualistic systems like Zoroastrianism compromise ultimate omnipotence/monotheism by positing competing eternal principles, while pantheistic or non-theistic traditions fail the cosmological requirement ($t = 0$) by equating God with the physical cosmos itself rather than its transcendent cause.

2. Refuting Objections to Phase 2 (Historical Evidence)

Objection F: "The Empty Tomb is not a minimal fact and has low scholar consensus."

  • The Counter-Argument: Strong historical criteria substantiate the Empty Tomb regardless of consensus percentages.

  • Refutation:

    • While Gary Habermas places the empty tomb at roughly ~75% scholarly consensus (compared to ~90%+ for the crucifixion), its historical grounding relies on critical historiographical criteria:

      1. Early Independent Attestation: Included in the pre-Markan passion narrative and early creedal traditions.

      2. Jerusalem Origin: The early movement began in Jerusalem; producing a body would have ended Christianity immediately.

      3. Criterion of Embarrassment: The primary discoverers cited are women, whose legal testimony carried no weight in 1st-century Jewish law. If fabricated, prominent male leaders would have been named.

Objection G: "Bereavement or grief hallucinations account for the post-mortem appearances."

  • The Counter-Argument: Hallucinations fail on psychological science, group settings, and hostile conversions.

  • Refutation:

    • Grief hallucinations are subjective, individual mental occurrences. Clinical psychology demonstrates that hallucinations cannot be experienced collectively across diverse groups in multiple distinct settings (e.g., individual encounters, group meetings in Galilee/Jerusalem, 1 Cor 15 tradition).

    • Hallucinations do not account for an empty grave, nor do they explain the sudden conversion of hostile, non-grieving skeptics like Paul (a persecutor) or James (a family skeptic).

Objection H: "We only have Paul's word for his skepticism and no corroboration for James."

  • The Counter-Argument: Early independent textual traditions corroborate their conversions.

  • Refutation:

    • Paul’s self-attested transformation is supported by early church tradition and early creedal material in 1 Corinthians 15:3–8, dated within 2–3 years of the event.

    • James’s early skepticism during Jesus’s lifetime is recorded independently in Mark (Mark 3:21) and John (John 7:5)—passing the criterion of embarrassment—while his post-resurrection leadership in Jerusalem and subsequent martyrdom are recorded by Josephus (Antiquities 20.9.1).

Objection I: "Resurrections have low prior probability.

  • The Counter-Argument: Low prior probability under naturalism disappears once Phase 1 establishes a personal Creator.

  • Refutation:

    • Claiming a resurrection is improbable a priori assumes naturalism. However, once Phase 1 establishes that a transcendent, omnipotent First Cause brought the entire physical universe into existence ex nihilo, raising a human body from the dead is a modest act for the Being who spoke the laws of physics into existence.

Yes, We Can Provide Evidence of Something That Exists Outside of Time and Space

Introduction

A persistent assumption in modern materialist discourse is that for something to be considered "real," it must occupy physical space and tick along with the flow of time. Under this narrow empiricism, demanding evidence for anything existing outside of space and time is often dismissed as a logical impossibility. Yet this objection fundamentally misunderstands how rational and scientific inquiry operates. We routinely affirm the existence of entities not through direct physical observation, but through explanatory necessity and logical inference. Far from being an elusive or mystical concept, reality beyond the spatiotemporal grid is already well established across mathematics, classical logic, linguistics, and modern theoretical physics.

Thus, providing evidence for a being or object existing "outside of space and time" requires shifting the definition of evidence from physical observation (which by definition requires space and time) to explanatory necessity or logical inference.

1. Mathematical Entities and Platonism

The most concrete candidates for non-spatiotemporal reality are mathematical entities—numbers, sets, and relations. Under the framework of Mathematical Platonism, mathematical truths are not human inventions or neural firing patterns; they are objective realities discovered by the human mind. Consider the prime number 7 or the geometric properties of a triangle. These objects possess no physical coordinates, carry zero mass, and undergo no decay over time. Even in a counterfactual scenario where all human life ceased and the physical cosmos collapsed into a black hole, the equation 3 + 4 = 7 would remain immutably true.

The primary evidence for their reality rests on the Quine-Putnam Indispensability Argument. This principle observes that mathematics is indispensable to our best, empirically verified scientific theories. If physics must appeal to abstract mathematics to successfully construct orbital mechanics, navigate GPS satellites, and map quantum interactions, we are logically committed to the ontological reality of those mathematical entities. Because these objects are causally efficacious in describing physical laws yet occupy no spatial coordinate, they represent indisputable proof of existence outside space and time.

EILI5Imagine you have two apples and get two more. While the apples are physical objects that can rot or disappear, the rule 2 + 2 = 4 cannot be touched, weighed, or destroyed. Even if every person and planet vanished, numbers and math rules would still be completely true, existing independently outside of space and time.

Mathematical Platonism is just the idea that numbers and math rules are real things that exist on their own, completely outside of space and time. We don't invent numbers in our heads like pretend games; we discover them, just like scientists discover gravity. And because rocket scientists and engineers must use real math to build spaceships and GPS satellites, we know those invisible math rules are actually real.

EILI5

2. The Invariant Laws of Logic

Underlying all coherent rational thought are the fundamental laws of logic, such as the Law of Non-Contradiction (A and non-A cannot both be true simultaneously in the same sense). These principles are metaphysically necessary (must be true in every possible world and could not possibly be false under any circumstances of reality); they govern the structure of every possible world. Even in a theoretical reality devoid of physical matter, energy, or duration, it remains an absolute impossibility for an entity to both exist and not exist in the same respect.

These foundational laws are neither composed of matter nor bound to temporal moments. They do not evolve, erode, or shift across space. Rather, they serve as the non-negotiable preconditions for any physical event or rational proposition to occur at all. They act as the transcendent "rules of the game" that exist independently of the material players interacting on the board.

EILI5 - Think of the ultimate rule that can never be broken anywhere: a toy car cannot be entirely red and entirely blue at the exact same second. While physical toys take up space and change over time, the rule itself has no physical parts, weight, or size. Even in an empty universe with no matter or ticking clocks, logic remains true outside the physical world.

3. Abstract Propositions and Semantic Truth

In linguistics and the philosophy of language, a critical distinction exists between physical tokens (the sound waves spoken by a mouth or ink printed on paper) and the underlying proposition—the abstract meaning being conveyed.

For instance, the statement "The cat is on the mat" describes a physical event in spacetime, but the semantic proposition itself carries no physical mass, volume, or spatial boundaries. You cannot weigh the concept of truth on a scale or locate meaning under a microscope. Multiple physical expressions across dozens of languages can convey the exact same immaterial proposition. The meaning remains objectively true or false regardless of the physical destruction of the medium on which it was written, pointing to an abstract layer of reality that transcends physical mediumship.

EILI5 - The sentence "The dog is brown" can be spoken out loud, typed on a screen, or written in another language—all physical forms you can see, hear, or erase. However, the actual idea or meaning behind those words has no physical weight and isn't destroyed if the paper burns. The physical words are just the packaging, while the true meaning lives outside of space and time.

4. Emergent Spacetime and Quantum Gravity

The frontier of theoretical physics has increasingly arrived at the conclusion that spacetime itself is not fundamental. Leading models attempting to unify quantum mechanics with general relativity—such as
Loop Quantum Gravity and M-Theory—indicate that at the ultra-microscopic Planck scale, classical notions of "here" and "now" entirely dissolve.

In these models, spacetime is an emergent property arising from a deeper non-spatiotemporal foundation, often described as a discrete network or spin foam. Just as the macroscopic sensation of temperature emerges from the motion of molecules that themselves have no temperature, the 4D fabric of space and time emerges from an underlying quantum state that possesses neither duration nor spatial extension. If spacetime is an emergent illusion, then the foundational bedrock of the universe necessarily exists prior to and outside of the spatiotemporal arena.

EILI5 - Imagine playing a video game where a character walks across a grassy field and watches an in-game timer tick down. To the character, space and time seem like the whole world, but they actually emerge from lines of computer code running underneath. Modern physics suggests space and time are just like that video game screen—emerging from a deeper layer of reality that has neither physical space nor ticking clocks.

Conclusion

Insisting that evidence must be restricted exclusively to physical objects located in space and time is an arbitrary constraint that both modern philosophy and contemporary physics have outgrown. Through the method of Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE), we infer the reality of non-physical entities precisely because they provide the necessary framework to account for the world we observe. Just as astronomers accept the existence of dark matter based on its gravitational pull on visible galaxies, we are rationally justified in affirming the existence of non-spatiotemporal realities. From immutable mathematical truths and the laws of logic to the uncaused First Cause. Without them, the existence of a rational, intelligible, and mathematically structured universe cannot be explained.

The Double Conspiracy Theory: A New Combination Hypothesis For Explaining The Apparent Resurrection Of Jesus Of Nazareth

Introduction

In contemporary Christian apologetics, the "minimal facts" argument stands as a formidable case for the resurrection of Jesus. By establishing a core bedrock of historical data accepted even by skeptical scholars - such as Jesus’ crucifixion, the empty tomb, and the sudden, transformative post-mortem appearances—apologists argue that a bodily resurrection remains the only viable inference. Secular rebuttals typically attempt to discard the data as legendary accretion or mass hallucination. However, in his provocative paper "The Double Conspiracy Theory," Bogdan Veklych takes a radically different route: he accepts eleven rigorous historical constraints as fact and constructs an intricate, purely naturalistic counter-narrative combining Roman espionage with a biological double. While designed to prove that a non-miraculous explanation is logically possible, examining Veklych’s framework reveals the immense probability penalty naturalism must pay when attempting to explain away the empty tomb without invoking the supernatural.

Below is a summary, analysis, evaluation, and refutation of the paper.

Summary of the Thesis

The author's primary goal is not to prove his theory is historically true, or even that it's the best explanation,  but to demonstrate that it is logically possible. Christian apologists often argue that because no mundane theory fits all the facts of the Resurrection, a miracle is the only reasonable inference. Veklych aims to turn this argument into dead wood by creating a narrative that satisfies 11 specific historical constraints without invoking the supernatural.

The Data Constraints

The theory accepts these as historical data points that any mundane explanation must satisfy:
  • 0) The Character: Jesus, his family, and his disciples were honest people of perfectly normal intelligence and mental faculties (not prone to mass delusion or simple lying).

  • 1) The Healings: Many people witnessed astonishing acts of faith healing; specifically, the resurrection of Lazarus is treated as an eyewitness narrative.

  • 2) The Miracles: Strong rumors of non-healing deeds (walking on water, virgin birth, feeding the 5,000) circulated with a speed that exceeds legendary accretion.

  • 3) The Transfiguration: Three Apostles (including Peter) heard a voice they identified as God the Father praising Jesus during the Transfiguration.

  • 4) The Execution: Jesus died on the cross, and his body was physically pierced by a Roman soldier's spear.

  • 5) The Guarded Tomb: Guards and priests saw the body inside and "felt it up" to confirm death before sealing the tomb, which was in solid rock with no other exits.

  • 6) The Physical Identity: The resurrected Jesus was physically identical in features, voice, and height. Crucially, his biological mother, Mary, knew for certain there was no other person (like a secret twin) besides Jesus.

  • 7) The Non-Recognition: Despite the identity, he was occasionally not recognized initially (Road to Emmaus, Mary Magdalene, and the Lake of Gennesaret).

  • 8) The Teleportation: He could instantly disappear (Emmaus) and appear inside locked rooms, as well as make 153 fish appear in a net.

  • 9) The Thomas Test: The skeptic Thomas physically shoved his fingers into the deep crucifixion wounds to verify the body's reality.

  • 10) The Ascension: Jesus bodily ascended into the sky, outdoors, in sunny conditions, with no nearby tall objects (trees/rocks) that could hide a mechanism, witnessed by multiple people.

Analysis: The Double Conspiracy Hypothesis

The Double nature of the theory comes from combining two existing secular frameworks:

1) The Eskovian Framework (The Roman Plot)

Referencing Kirill Eskov’s The Gospel of Afranius, this component suggests that the "resurrection" was a high-level psychological operation managed by the Roman secret service (specifically under Pontius Pilate).

The first pillar of this hypothesis relies on the Eskovian framework, drawing directly from the narrative model popularized in Kirill Eskov’s The Gospel of Afranius. Under this paradigm, the apparent resurrection is reconstructed not as a divine intervention or a spontaneous religious movement, but as an orchestrated psychological operation executed by the Roman provincial administration under Pontius Pilate.

From a strategic standpoint, this covert operation aimed to manage civil volatility in Judea by engineering a peaceful, pacifist Jewish sect whose teachings would inherently temper anti-imperial rebellion and stabilize the broader region. To achieve this objective without exposing state involvement, Roman operatives supposedly leveraged contemporary stagecraft, optical illusions, and calculated misdirection. By simulating miracles and staging post-mortem appearances, the administration intended to guide the nascent movement toward Roman interests, effectively utilizing covert religious engineering as an instrument of imperial statecraft.

2) The Cavin Framework (The Biological/Physical Plot)

The second pillar of the hypothesis incorporates the Cavin framework, drawing on the mechanistic arguments formulated by Robert Gregory Cavin to explain the tangible reality of the post-mortem encounters. While the Eskovian framework provides the geopolitical motive, this component supplies the physical mechanics required to satisfy the strict physiological constraints of the data without invoking divine agency.

Under this model, the post-crucifixion appearances are explained through the deployment of a biological double - a lookalike or unknown twin whose resemblance was so strikingly identical in voice, stature, and facial features that it successfully deceived intimate family members, including Jesus' own mother, as well as hardened skeptics like Thomas. Furthermore, the anomalous phenomena associated with these encounters—such as sudden disappearances, appearances within locked rooms, and anomalous feats—are interpreted not as supernatural acts, but as sophisticated, pre-rigged stagecraft. Drawing an analogy to modern illusionists who manipulate perception and spatial control, the hypothesis posits that Roman operatives exploited hidden architectural access and deliberate misdirection to simulate instantaneous manifestations and impossible physical feats.

Evaluation

Strengths

In evaluating the merits of the proposal, two distinct methodological strengths stand out.

First, the hypothesis exhibits commendable intellectual rigor. Rather than adopting the conventional skeptical approach of summarily dismissing the New Testament record as legendary accretion or unhistorical folklore, Bogdan Veklych takes the apologists’ own "minimal facts" framework seriously. By deliberately accepting these rigorous historical constraints as baseline premises, he attempts to engage the core evidentiary arguments on their own terms.

Second, the argument is anchored in a defined philosophical strategy, effectively weaponizing the classic Sherlockian maxim that once the impossible has been eliminated, whatever remains—no matter how improbable—must be the truth. By treating supernatural miracles as fundamentally impossible within a strict materialist paradigm, Veklych shifts the epistemic calculation: a vast, improbable web of naturalistic coincidences is framed not as an untenable leap of faith, but as the only logically permissible conclusion left on the table.

Weaknesses

At its core, The Double Conspiracy Theory functions as an exercise in proof of concept. Bogdan Veklych succeeds in his narrow operational goal: demonstrating that if one operates from strict metaphysical naturalism, it is always technically possible to construct a naturalistic narrative - regardless of how overly complicated, convoluted, or improbable. Just to preserve the assumption that a dead man cannot rise bodily from the grave.

However, evaluating the paper’s success exposes a profound tension in historical and scientific epistemology, specifically regarding abduction, or inference to the best explanation (IBE). In standard abductive reasoning, scholars do not merely look for what is theoretically possible; they evaluate candidate hypotheses against established explanatory criteria - such as explanatory power, explanatory scope, plausibility, and simplicity (avoiding ad hoc or multiplying assumptions).

By prioritizing mere logical possibility over genuine explanatory merit, Veklych’s model shifts the entire debate from historical data to competing worldviews. If one’s epistemic framework permits the possibility of the supernatural, the Resurrection stands as a coherent inference that explains the full breadth of the data with a single, unified cause. Conversely, if one assumes a priori that miracles are impossible, one is forced into an abductive failure: adopting an increasingly strained web of nested conspiracies, pristine doubles, and theatrical illusions simply because it remains the only naturalistic option left on the table.

Synthesis

Veklych’s paper is essentially a proof of concept. It succeeds in its narrow goal: showing that if you are a committed materialist, you can always construct a conspiracy theory that is still more likely than a dead man coming back to life, no matter how convoluted. It shifts the debate from historical evidence to worldview. If you believe miracles are possible, the Resurrection is the best explanation; if you believe they are impossible, Veklych's "Double Conspiracy" becomes the default truth.

Of course, once the debate shifts from examining historical data to defending underlying worldviews, the burden of proof fundamentally changes. The materialist can no longer sit back as a detached, neutral critic who simply defaults to skepticism; they are now squarely on the hook to positively prove philosophical materialism. And that is a problem for them

Naturalism cannot merely be assumed as an unexamined baseline that automatically rules out the transcendent. When a historical hypothesis demands a massive web of ad hoc coincidences, staged illusions, and pristine doubles just to avoid a single miracle, it exposes a rigid presupposition at work. If an explanation requires absurd historical contortions solely to protect a materialist worldview, the naturalist bears the epistemic obligation to demonstrate that reality is strictly closed to the supernatural in the first place.

The Refutation

Refuting a theory designed specifically to be logically possible (rather than historically probable) requires moving beyond that’s unlikely to showing where the internal logic breaks down or where the complexity penalty becomes so high that the theory ceases to be a functional explanation.

The Honesty Contradiction (Constraints 0, 6, & 9)

Veklych assumes all parties were honest and of normal intelligence. This creates a major logical bottleneck:

  • The Mother’s Knowledge: Constraint 6 says Mary knew "for sure" there was no lookalike. If a twin or double existed, a mother (especially in a small village like Nazareth) would know. For her to be honest yet not reveal this fact during the crucifixion or the subsequent 40 days requires her to be either part of the conspiracy (violating Constraint 0) or suffering from a specific, localized delusion.

  • The Thomas Test: In Constraint 9, Thomas shoves his fingers into the wounds. To fool an unusually rational skeptic through touch, the double would need not just a resemblance, but identical surgical scarring or fresh, open trauma in the exact same anatomical locations. Simulating this with stage magic that survives a physical shove is beyond the medical or magical capabilities of the 1st century.

The Stage Magic Anachronism (Constraints 1, 3, 8, & 10)

The theory relies heavily on the "David Blaine" defense, that if it looks like magic today, it could be a trick then. However, this fails on environmental control:

  • The Transfiguration & Ascension: These occurred outdoors (Constraints 3 & 10). Modern stage magic relies on "the box," "the lighting," and "the angle." Performing a flight into the clouds (Ascension) in broad daylight, in an open field, with no tall object for wires or mirrors, is a feat that even 21st-century magicians like Copperfield cannot perform without a television audience and controlled camera angles.

  • The Locked Room Problem: For the Romans to rig a secret entrance into the Apostles' upper room (Constraint 8), they would have needed prior access to a private, secure hiding spot used by a group of outlaws. It assumes the Roman Secret Service had "Home Alone" style control over every building in Jerusalem.

The Roman Incentive Gap (The Eskovian Flaw)

The theory posits that Pontius Pilate and the Roman Secret Service (Afranius) created Christianity to stabilize the region. Historically, this had the opposite effect:

  • Strategic Failure: If the goal was a peaceful, pro-Roman sect, the plan failed spectacularly. Within decades, Christians were being executed for refusing to worship the Emperor, causing massive civil unrest and eventually contributing to the ideological destabilization of the Empire.

  • The Martyrdom Problem: For a conspiracy to work, the agents (the double/twin and the handlers) must be willing to die for a lie. While the Apostles' honesty is granted, the "Double" himself would have to live a life of total 24/7 performance, eventually ascending (disappearing/dying) just to satisfy a Roman psychological op. No intelligence agency in history has ever successfully maintained a deep-cover operation of this scale without a single defector or leak.

The Body Swapping Paradox (Constraint 5)

Constraint 5 states that Jewish priests and guards "felt the body up" inside a solid rock tomb with no secret exits.

  • The Impassable Barrier: If the tomb was truly sealed and guarded, and the body was "felt" to be dead by skeptics {Roman and Jewish guards, as well as some Jewish priests}, the only way for a body-double to appear later is if the original body was moved.

  • The Contradiction: If the guards were honest and competent, they wouldn't lose the body. If they were bribed or part of the Roman Plot, then the Minimal Facts regarding the Guarded Tomb are no longer facts; they are part of the lie. The theory tries to have it both ways: keeping the Guarded Tomb as a historical fact while using Conspiracy to bypass the very security that makes the tomb a fact.

Occam’s Razor and the Complexity Penalty

Philosophically, Veklych argues that "Improbable > Impossible." However, in Bayesian terms, the likelihood of a theory decreases with every "and" you add:

  • A perfect twin AND a Roman Governor staging a fake religion AND 1st-century holographic-level stage magic AND the mother not noticing AND the double willing to disappear forever.

  • Each of these "ands" carries a massive probability penalty. At a certain point, the "Double Conspiracy" becomes more statistically untenable (requiring a perfect alignment of a thousand low-probability variables) than the single supernatural event it seeks to replace.

  • All of this assumes that the materialist worldview is correct.

Assuming that Materialism is True

The Problem of Begging the Question

The most significant issue is circular reasoning. If a researcher assumes at the outset that the supernatural is impossible, any investigation into an event that looks supernatural (like the Resurrection or the origins of the universe) will automatically be forced into a materialist mold.

  • The Result: You aren't discovering the truth based on where the evidence leads; you are simply confirming your own starting assumption. The conclusion is baked into the premise.

The Complexity Penalty (Occam’s Razor)

As seen in theories like the Double Conspiracy Theory, a committed materialist must often construct increasingly elaborate, ad hoc explanations to account for anomalies.

  • The Logic: A single miracle might be impossible in a materialist worldview, but a chain of ten highly improbable coincidences (secret twins, Roman plots, stage magic) is possible.

  • The Problem: At a certain point, the possible conspiracy becomes so complex and unlikely that it violates Occam's Razor, the principle that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

The Epistemological Self-Defeat

This is frequently called the Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism. If materialism is true, then human thoughts are simply the byproduct of chemical reactions and evolutionary pressures designed for survival, not necessarily for truth.

  • The Paradox: If our cognitive faculties are merely meat computers optimized to keep us alive, we have no objective reason to trust that our logic, including the logic used to argue for materialism, is actually accurate. It creates a loop where the materialist's own brain becomes an unreliable witness to its own theories.

Category Errors

Materialism attempts to use empirical tools (measurement, observation) to disprove things that are, by definition, non-empirical (spirit, consciousness, God).

  • The Analogy: It is like using a metal detector to find a wooden box and concluding the box doesn't exist because the detector didn't beep. The problem is not the absence of the box, but the limitation of the tool.

Conclusion: The Labyrinth of Materialism

The Double Conspiracy Theory is a masterclass in what happens when intellectual rigor meets a rigid philosophical boundary. Bogdan Veklych succeeds in creating a logically consistent loophole, but in doing so, he demonstrates the staggering complexity penalty required to maintain a strictly materialist worldview in the face of the Resurrection data.

By the time one accounts for 1) perfect twins, 2) Roman secret service plots, 3) 1st-century "stage magic" that works in broad daylight, and 4)_a mother who doesn't recognize her own son. The explanation becomes far more miraculous in its coincidences than the event it seeks to replace. It doesn't even try to be an Inference to the Best Explanation; it's merely a "just-so" story - an unverifiable, speculative, or imaginative explanation for how a phenomenon came to be, often reverse-engineered to fit a desired outcome, designed to protect a premise rather than discover a truth.
