The Islamic Dilemma

The Islamic Dilemma is a polemical argument primarily used in Christian apologetics to challenge the consistency of Islamic theology. [see this schoarlly breakdown] It was popularized by Christian apologist David Wood and is frequently used in interfaith debates.

The argument posits that the Quran creates a logical trap for Muslims regarding the authority of the Bible (specifically the Torah and the Gospel/Injil)

The Logic of the Argument

The dilemma rests on the assertion that 1) the Quran affirms the previous scriptures (the Bible) as the inspired, preserved word of God, yet 2) simultaneously contradicts their core teachings. The argument is structured as a catch-22 with two possible outcomes, both of which (according to the argument) lead to the conclusion that Islam is false.

The dilemma is presented as follows:

Premise 1: The Quran affirms the Torah and the Gospel as divine revelations and commands Christians to judge by them (e.g., Surah 5:47).

Premise 2: The Quran claims that God's words cannot be changed or altered (e.g., Surah 6:115).

The Dilemma:

  • Horn A: The Bible is Reliable. If the Torah and Gospel are reliable and preserved (as the Quran suggests they are the unchangeable word of God), then Islam is false because the Bible directly contradicts Islamic teachings (e.g., the Bible teaches Jesus is the Son of God and died on a cross; the Quran denies this).
  • Horn B: The Bible is Corrupted.  If the Torah and Gospel are corrupted (as most Muslims believe), then Islam is false because the Quran affirms them as the word of God.6 If the Quran affirms a corrupted book as the word of God, the Quran is in error.

Conclusion: Whether the Bible is reliable or corrupted, the Quran's position on it leads to a contradiction.

The Islamic Response (Counter-Arguments)

Muslim scholars and apologists have several standard responses to this argument, arguing that the dilemma is based on a misunderstanding of Islamic theology:

  • Distinction of Texts (The Injil vs. The Gospels):Muslims argue that the "Injil" mentioned in the Quran refers to the original, oral revelation given to Jesus by God, not the canonical four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) found in the New Testament today. Therefore, affirming the Injil does not mean affirming the modern Bible.

  • Doctrine of Corruption (Tahrif):Mainstream Islamic theology teaches Tahrif—that the previous scriptures were altered by human scribes over time. When the Quran says "none can change His words," scholars interpret this as referring to God's decrees, promises, or the preserved tablet in heaven, not that physical books on earth cannot be tampered with by humans.

  • Quran as the Criterion (Al-Furqan): Muslims view the Quran as the final authority that confirms the truth found in previous scriptures while correcting the errors and corruptions that crept into them.8

Summary Table

ViewpointCore Claim
The ArgumentThe Quran locks Muslims into a logical bind: either they accept the Bible (and reject Islam's theology) or reject the Bible (and reject the Quran's testimony about it).
The CounterThe Quran affirms the original revelation (Injil), not the current text (Bible). The current Bible contains remnants of truth but is mixed with human corruption.
The Islamic Dilemma debate relies heavily on specific Quranic verses and the theological evolution of Tahrif (corruption). Here is a breakdown of the verses that form the argument and the history of the concept used to refute it.

The Verses Used to Form The Dilemma

The argument uses two categories of verses to build the "trap": those that command Muslims/Christians to trust the previous scriptures, and those that state God's words cannot be changed.

A. Verses Affirming the Bible (Torah & Gospel)

These verses are cited to argue that the Quran views the Bible available in Muhammad’s time (7th Century) as authoritative and uncorrupted.

  • Surah 5:47: "And let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient."

    • The Argument: Why would God command Christians to judge by a book that was already corrupted?

  • Surah 5:68: "Say, 'O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [or observe] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord'..."

    • The Argument: This implies the Torah and Gospel were available and valid to be "upheld" at that time.

  • Surah 10:94: "So if you are in doubt, [O Muhammad], about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you..."

    • The Argument: Muhammad is told to verify his own revelation by checking with Christians and Jews. If their books were corrupt, they couldn't serve as a fact-check.

B. Verses Stating God's Words Cannot Be Changed

These verses are used to argue that if the Torah and Gospel are God's words (as affirmed above), they cannot have been corrupted.

  • Surah 6:115: "And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing."

  • Surah 18:27: "And recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words..."

2. The Concept of Tahrif (Corruption)

The primary Islamic counter-argument is the doctrine of Tahrif. However, this concept is nuanced and has evolved throughout Islamic history.

Definition: Tahrif refers to the distortion, alteration, or corruption of scripture.

The Two Types of Tahrif

Islamic theology distinguishes between two methods of corruption:

  1. Tahrif al-Ma'na (Corruption of Meaning): The text is physically correct, but the interpretation is twisted or distorted by the reader/scholar.

  2. Tahrif al-Lafz (Corruption of Text): The physical words of the book have been changed, deleted, or added to.

Historical Evolution: Ibn Abbas vs. Ibn Hazm

This is the most critical part of the debate history that often gets missed.

  • The Early View (Tahrif al-Ma'na): Early Islamic scholars, most notably Ibn Abbas (the cousin of Prophet Muhammad and a revered exegete), largely held the view that the text of the Torah and Gospel remained intact. They believed the "corruption" mentioned in the Quran referred to Jews and Christians misinterpreting their own books.

    • Quote attributed to Ibn Abbas: "They corrupt the word means 'they alter or change its meaning,' yet no one is able to change even a single word from any Book of God." (Cited in Sahih Bukhari).

  • The Later View (Tahrif al-Lafz): As Muslims engaged in more debates with Christians and noticed deep contradictions (e.g., the Trinity vs. Tawhid), the view shifted. Ibn Hazm (d. 1064 AD) is the scholar most responsible for popularizing the idea that the Bible's text itself is corrupted (Tahrif al-Lafz). He argued that because the Bible contradicts the Quran, and contains internal contradictions, the text must have been tampered with.

Why this matters for the dilemma:

  • Critics argue that the Quran supports the "Early View" (text is preserved, interpretation is wrong), which traps Islam because the text of the Bible explicitly contradicts Islam (e.g., Jesus' divinity).

  • Apologists today largely hold the "Later View" (text is corrupted), arguing that the verses affirming the "Gospel" refer to the original lost revelation given to Jesus, not the New Testament.

Muslim scholars generally interpret Surah 5:47 ("Let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein...") in ways that avoid the logical trap of the "Islamic Dilemma."

While the "Dilemma" argument suggests this verse commands modern Christians to follow the current New Testament (thereby validating it), Muslim exegesis (tafsir) typically categorizes this command in three ways: as a historical statement, a command to follow specific prophecies, or a command that ultimately leads to Islam.

1. The Historical Interpretation (Past Command)

Many classical commentators, such as Ibn Kathir and Al-Jalalayn, view this verse as referencing the original time the Gospel was revealed, not necessarily a standing order for all eternity.

The Logic: The verse is often read in conjunction with the previous verse (5:46), which describes God giving Jesus the Injil.

The Reading: "We gave him the Gospel... [so that] the People of the Gospel [might] judge by what Allah has revealed therein."

Grammatical Nuance: Some scholars point to a variant recitation or grammatical structure where the "Let them judge" is linked to the purpose of God sending the book at that time.

Conclusion: The command was for the original followers of Jesus to follow the pure revelation he received before it was corrupted or abrogated by the Quran.

2. The "Prophecy" Interpretation (Selective Judgment)

This is a very common modern defense. It argues that if Christians truly judged by the Gospel—even the current corrupted one—they would find prophecies leading them to Muhammad.
  • The Logic: Muslims argue that despite corruption, remnants of the truth remain in the Bible (e.g., verses they interpret as predicting Muhammad, such as the "Paraclete" in John 14-16).

  • The Command: "Judge by the Gospel" means "Follow the parts of your own book that command you to follow the final Prophet."

  • The Trap Reversal: Instead of validating Christian theology (Trinity, Crucifixion), this interpretation uses the Bible to validate Islam. If Christians followed the "true" teaching of Jesus found in their book, they would become Muslims.

3. The "Quran as Criterion" Interpretation (Abrogation)

This interpretation relies on the concept of the Quran as Al-Muhaymin (The Guardian/The Quality Control).

  • The Logic: Since the Quran is the final revelation, it serves as the filter for previous scriptures.

  • The Command: For a Christian to "judge by what God revealed," they must judge by the standard God set. Since God revealed the Quran to correct the Gospel, "judging by the Gospel" in its truest sense means recognizing its limitations and accepting the final update (Islam).

  • Verse 5:48: Muslims point to the very next verse (5:48), which says the Quran was sent "confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it." They argue you cannot read 5:47 without 5:48, which establishes the Quran as the final judge over the Bible.

Summary of the Conflict

PerspectiveInterpretation of "Judge by the Gospel"Conclusion
The "Dilemma" ArgumentGod is commanding Christians to use the current New Testament as their authority.Trap: If Muslims say the Bible is corrupt, they contradict this verse. If they say it's valid, they contradict the Quran.
Muslim ResponseGod is commanding Christians to follow the original instruction to follow the coming Prophet (Muhammad).Escape: The verse is either a historical account of Jesus's time or a challenge to Christians to find the prophecies of Islam in their own books.

Note on the "Injil" vs. "Gospels"

A critical part of the Muslim defense is the definition of Injil.

  • Christian View: The Gospels are the four books (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) written by witnesses or associates of witnesses.

  • Muslim View: The Injil was a specific book of divine revelation sent down to Jesus (similar to how the Quran was sent to Muhammad). They believe the current four Gospels are merely historical accounts about Jesus (biographies) that contain only fragments of the original Injil. Therefore, the command to "judge by the Injil" is not an endorsement of the New Testament canon.

The "Counter" to the Muslim defense is the Christian apologist's rebuttal. This stage of the debate is where the argument shifts from theology to history and textual criticism.

Apologists (like David Wood, James White, and Jay Smith) argue that the Muslim defenses—specifically the "Corruption" (Tahrif) and "Lost Injil" theories—collapse when examined against historical evidence.

Here is the standard counter-argument used to refute the Muslim defense:

1. The "Timeline" Trap (Manuscript Evidence)

This is the strongest historical counter. The Muslim defense claims the Bible was corrupted eventually. The apologist asks: "When?"

  • The Trap:

    • Option A: Before Muhammad? If the Bible was corrupted before the 7th century, why does the Quran tell Christians to "Judge by it" and "uphold it"? Why does God confirm a corrupted book?

    • Option B: After Muhammad? If the corruption happened after the 7th century, we can check the manuscripts to see if they were changed.

  • The Evidence: We possess complete biblical manuscripts from centuries before Muhammad was born (e.g., Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus, dated c. 300–350 AD).

    • The Conclusion: The Bible we have today is effectively identical to the Bible Christians had in Muhammad's time. If the Quran affirmed the Bible then, it affirms the Bible now. Therefore, the "Corruption" defense is historically impossible because the text hasn't changed since the Quran was written.

2. The "Mythical Injil" Rebuttal

Muslims argue that the "Injil" refers to a specific book given to Jesus (not the four Gospels). Apologists counter that this book never existed.

  • Historical Silence: There is zero historical evidence—no fragments, no quotes, no references by early church fathers or heretics—of a single book written by Jesus called "The Injil."

  • The Argument: Apologists argue that the "Lost Injil" is an ad hoc concept invented by Islamic theologians to explain why the real Bible contradicts the Quran. They argue it is historically dishonest to claim a book existed without a shred of proof, solely to save a theological position.

  • Linguistic Evidence: The Arabic word Injil is simply a transliteration of the Greek word Euangelion (Good News). Christians in the 7th century used this term to refer to the New Testament message, not a specific lost book. When the Quran says Injil, it is referring to the text the Christians were actually reading (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John).

3. The "Word of God" Logical Bind

This counters the theological idea that "The Quran is the criterion/corrector."

  • The Logic:

    1. The Quran states, "None can change His words" (6:115).

    2. The Quran states the Torah and Gospel are "His words" (3:3).

    3. The Dilemma: If you say the Torah and Gospel are corrupted, you are saying God's words were changed. This contradicts the Quran (6:115).

  • The Conclusion: A Muslim cannot logically believe both that the Quran is true (God's words are protected) AND that the Bible is corrupted (God's words were changed). They must choose one or the other.

4. Rebutting the "Judge by" Interpretation

Muslims argue "Judge by the Gospel" means "Judge by the specific parts that prophesy Muhammad." Apologists argue this violates the text's grammar and context.

  • Context of the Verse: The verse (5:47) says, "Let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein..." Apologists argue this is an ongoing command in the present tense. You cannot command someone to judge by a book that doesn't exist (the "Lost Injil") or a book that is full of lies (a "corrupted" Bible).

  • The "Double Standard": If the Bible is 90% corrupt and only 10% true (the parts that agree with Islam), how were 7th-century Christians supposed to know which 10% was "safe" to judge by? The command only makes sense if the book they possessed was viewed by the Quran's author as reliable.

1) If the Qur’an affirms the Torah and the Injil (Gospel) it contradicts them and is wrong.

2) If the Torah and the Injil (Gospel) are corrupted, then the Qur’an is still false because it affirms it.

Both arguments result in an unresolvable error.

If the Qur’an is perfect and is God's word perfectly preserved, would it have mistakes? Of course not. If there are errors in the Qur’an it can not be God's word.

The Qur’an makes claims. If those claims are true, it could be God's word. If the Qur’an makes false claims, it cannot.

Islam believes that the Qur’an is perfect and therefore is a miracle of God. God though had other plans and left mistakes in the Qur’an that prove it false.

One error destroys this miracle. The Qur’an affirms the Injil (the Gospel). Here is the first mistake of many:the Injil is the word of God (the Gospels), Islam contradicts it and Islam fails.
If the Injil (the Gospels) is corrupted, Islam still fails because the Qur’an affirms its authority.

Both positions of the argument point to the failure of Islam and the failure of Allah's foresight or power or wisdom. Why has he allowed you to be in this position?

The Qur’an declares you can trust the Injil. But Muslims today do not believe that. Down below we will go into many arguments about why Black is White or Up is Down but look at it clearly, if this is Allah's word why is it wrong or why is it confusing of why did Allah fail or why does the Qur’an redefine Jesus (the most important question)

he Qur’an Commands Muslims to Acknowledge Previous Revelations

In Surah 29, verse 46, the Qur’an commands Muslims to say to Christians:

"We believe in what has been revealed to us and in what has been revealed to you. Our God and your God is one, and to Him we submit."

Surah Al-Ankabut 29:46

Despite this command, many Muslims say something different to Christians. They assert, "We don't believe in your book because it's been corrupted, and your God is a false God."

Contradiction Between Qur’anic Command and Muslim Beliefs About the Bible

If Muslims are commanded to believe in what has been revealed to Christians (the Bible), why do they claim that the Bible is corrupted? If the Qur’an says that their God and our God are the same, why do they instead assert that the Christian God is false?

These contradictions are across the board and absolute. The Bible agrees with itself 1,000 times. The Quran stands apart.

Here are three that show the complete deviation of the two sets of scripture.
1. Mediator Between God and Man

1 Timothy 2:5 (NIV): "For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus."

Surah 2:255 (Ayat al-Kursi) (Sahih International): "Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. ... Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?"

2. Tawhid versus Trinity
The Qur’an's Teaching on God and the Bible's Teaching on the Trinity

According to the Bible, God is a Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) while the Qur’an denies this. If Muslims follow the Qur’an, they can't believe in the Bible's account of the Trinity and Jesus' death and resurrection. This leads Muslims to reject the Bible because it contradicts the Qur’an's teachings.

1 Corinthians 8:6 (NIV): "Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."

Surah 4:171 (Sahih International): "O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah ... So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, ‘Three’; desist – it is better for you."

3. Eternal Life

John 3:16 (NIV): "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Surah 3:185 (Sahih International): "Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]."

The Qur’an Affirms the Torah and Gospel as Revelations from Allah

Some Muslims will say that the Injil is not the Gospels of the New Testament. That it is another book give to Jesus. But that idea falls down immediately you step beyond it.

If the Injil is a separate book where is it? What historical commentator Christian or Roman or Greek referenced this separate book? The Qur’an says it was a book in the hands of Christian in 700. Where is there a copy of this other book or references to it from 200 AD through to now? That is an argument from zero evidence.

The Qur’an declares that the Torah and the Gospel were revealed by Allah. In Surah 3, verses 3-4, it

"He has revealed to you the Book with truth, verifying that which is before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel before, as guidance for the people, and He sent the Qur’an."

Surah Aal-E-Imran 3:3-4

If Allah revealed the Torah and the Gospel as guidance, how could they have become corrupted? This creates a tension with the belief that Allah's guidance would mislead people.

The Injil is not the Christian Gospel

"And let the followers of the Evangel judge according to what Allâh has revealed therein. And indeed those who do not judge according to what Allâh has revealed it is these who are the real disobedient."

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:47

"And We have revealed to you this perfect Book comprising the truth and wisdom, fulfilling (the prophecies of) the Scripture which was present before it and stands as a guardian over it, then judge between them according to that which Allâh has revealed (of the Qur'ân ), and do not deviate from the truth that has come to you in order to follow their low desires. For each one of you did We prescribe a spiritual law and a well-defined way (- a code in secular matters). And if Allâh had so willed He might have made you all one community (by force), but He wishes to show your perfection (the capacities and capabilities) that He has endowed you with. Therefore vie one with another in (doing) good deeds. To Allâh is the return of you all, then He will inform you as to that wherein you were at variance."

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:48

In this passage above the Qur’an say the Injil is a physical book in the hands of Christians. And then is says explicitly says "do not deviate from the truth that has come to you in order to follow their low desires" so you have to accept that it existed at the time of Muhammad and was publicly held. What could that be historically other than the bible, the Torah and the Gospels.

Here is a link to the further explanation to the injil, What is the Injil?

The Qur’an States Allah's Words Cannot Be Changed

In Surah 18, verse 27, the Qur’an asserts that no one can change Allah's

"And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is none who can change His words, and you shall not find any refuge besides Him."

Surah Al-Kahf 18:27

If no one can change Allah's words, and the Torah and Gospel are considered Allah's words, how can Muslims argue that the Bible has been corrupted?

Muslims Are Commanded to Judge by the Gospel

If the Gospel has been corrupted, why would Allah command Christians to judge by it? The only Gospel Christians have contradicts Islam, so judging by it would lead them to reject Islam.

Surah 5, verse 47, commands Christians to judge by the

"Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by the light of what Allah hath revealed, they are no better than those who rebel."

Surah Al-Maidah 5:47

Qur’an Affirms the Authority of the Gospel's

Why would Allah tell Christians to stand upon the Torah and Gospel if these were corrupted? If they were truly corrupted, Allah would have instructed them to abandon these books in favor of the Qur’an.

In Surah 5, verse 68, the Qur’an tells the people of the Book to hold to the bible that they have.

"Say, O people of the Book, you have no ground to stand upon unless you stand fast by the Torah, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord."

Surah Al-Maidah 5:68

Muhammad Commanded to Seek Confirmation from Jews and Christians

When Muhammad had doubts about his revelations, Allah commanded him to seek confirmation from the people of the Bible and the Christians and the Jews. It was not that he doubted but if he doubted the resolution of his doubt was to be found outside of the Quran and in the scriptures they had in their hands.

"But if you, O Muhammad, are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, ask those who read the Book before you. Certainly, the truth has come to you from your Lord, therefore you should not be of the disputers."

Surah Yunus 10:94

This shows that even Muhammad was directed to seek confirmation from the scriptures of Jews and Christians, further affirming the authority of these scriptures.

The Dilemma: Gospel's Authority Versus Qur’anic Contradiction

The Qur’an puts Muslims in an inescapableIf the Gospel is still the inspired, preserved, authoritative word of God, then Islam is false because the teachings of the Gospel contradict the Qur’an.
If the Gospel has been corrupted, then Islam is also false because the Qur’an affirms the inspiration, preservation, and authority of the Gospel.
Conclusion: Either Way, Islam Is False

Whether the Gospel is the word of God or not, Islam faces a self-destructive contradiction. If the Gospel is the word of God, Islam is false because it contradicts the core teachings of the Gospel.
If the Gospel is not the word of God, Islam is false because the Qur’an affirms the authority of the Gospel.

By affirming scriptures that contradict its core teachings, Islam self-destructs. Muslims who don't want to believe in a self-destructive religion will need to find a new belief system. Let's encourage our Muslim friends to obey the Gospel as both the Bible and Qur’an command.

This logical proposition shows in this circumstance that the Qur’an is not perfect. There are 100 other issues with it but that is not the issue. The issue of the Qur’an is it resets who Jesus is. Jesus is the answer. Jesus is Your answer.

Islam says you can get your own sins forgiven. That is a lie. Your sins separate you from God. That is the start of the Gospel message.

Without a solution to your separation from God you will die separated from God.

There is no way past that problem other than Jesus. Let me explain

The Islamic Dilemma

The Islamic Dilemma is a polemical argument primarily used in Christian apologetics to challenge the consistency of Islamic theology. [ see ...
