McClellan, Robert Gagnon, the Bible & Homosexuality

I read Dr. Robert A. J. Gagnon 's book, The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics, many years ago, and he approaches the topic through historical-grammatical exegesis, Ancient Near Eastern context, Greco-Roman cultural history, and theological hermeneutics.

In the book, Gagnon shows that across both the Old and New Testaments, Scripture consistently, and without exception views same-sex erotic behavior as inherently contrary to God’s design.

Modern arguments attempting to set aside biblical prohibitions - whether by appealing to "love and justice," ancient ignorance of sexual orientation, cultural exploitation, or analogies to slavery and the status of women - do not hold up under his textual or theological scrutiny.

Dan McClellan regularly argues from a descriptive, historical-critical standpoint that biblical texts are fragmented, context-bound, and never contemplated modern sexual orientations or lifelong mutual partnerships.

I highly recommend his book, but if you are interested in an overview, you can listen to Robert Gagnon's 19 part video series where he critiques "Dogma Dan" McClellan on Homosexuality  on YouTube.

Gagnon's critique addresses McClellan's specific linguistic arguments (e.g., Leviticus's use of to'evah, Pauline coinages like arsenokoitai, and historical-grammatical categories). Gagnon also highlights McClellan's own hidden dogmatic presuppositions.
