Why Knowledge Is Justified True Belief

Introduction 

We use the word "know" dozens of times a day - we claim to know the weather forecast, where our car keys are, or the score of last night's game. But what does it actually mean to possess knowledge rather than just an opinion, a hunch, or a lucky guess? For centuries, mainstream epistemology has answered this question through the Justified True Belief (JTB) account. Under this classic framework, knowledge is not a vague feeling of certainty; it is a precisely defined cognitive state requiring three distinct, non-negotiable conditions.


The Analogy: The Three-Legged Stool of Truth Imagine a three-legged wooden stool. For that stool to support weight and function as a seat, all three legs must be sturdy and firmly on the floor.

  • The first leg is the Belief leg: you have to actually sit on it (accept the claim).

  • The second leg is the Truth leg: the floor beneath it must be solid reality, not thin air.

  • The third leg is the Justification leg: the carpentry must be properly braced by evidence and sound reasons.

If you believe a claim that isn't true, the stool hovers over a void and collapses. If a claim is true but you don't actually believe it, you aren't sitting on the stool at all. And if a claim happens to be true and you believe it—but only because of a coin flip, a tarot card, or a wild guess—the third leg is missing, and the stool will tip over the moment it is tested. Knowledge only stands when all three legs are firmly locked together.

1. The Formal JTB Tripartite Definition

In traditional epistemology, knowledge is analyzed through a standard tripartite formula. A subject $S$ knows a proposition P if and only if:

1 - P is true (The Truth Condition)

2 - S believes that P is true (The Belief Condition)

3 - S is justified in believing that P is true (The Justification Condition)

2. Breaking Down the Three Elements

  • Belief (The Mindset): A belief is any cognitive acceptance or assent to a proposition. To know something, you cannot be utterly indifferent or agnostic toward it; you must hold it in your mind as actual fact. You cannot meaningfully say, "I know Paris is the capital of France, but I don't believe it."

  • Truth (The Reality): Knowledge is strictly factive. A belief must correspond to the objective state of affairs in the actual world (the correspondence theory of truth). If someone in the 14th century claimed to "know" that the sun orbited the earth, they did not possess knowledge; they held a sincere, yet false, belief. You cannot know a falsehood.

  • Justification (The Evidence): Sincerity and truth alone do not equal knowledge. If a gambler sincerely believes a roulette wheel will land on red 17, and it miraculously does, his belief was true—but he did not know it beforehand. Justification requires adequate grounding: empirical observation, logical deduction, reliable testimony, or robust scientific data.

3. Necessity vs. Sufficiency

  • A Necessary Condition is a requirement that must be present for an event or definition to hold. (For instance, oxygen is necessary for human life; without it, life cannot continue.) In the JTB account, each of the three conditions is individually necessary: strip away truth, belief, or justification, and knowledge instantly vanishes.

  • A Sufficient Condition is a state or set of conditions that guarantees the outcome. (For instance, being decapitated is sufficient for death.) In classical epistemology, possessing all three conditions simultaneously is claimed to be jointly sufficient to constitute genuine knowledge.

4. The Limits: Why JTB Sparked the Gettier Problem

While JTB held sway as the standard definition of knowledge from Plato's Theaetetus through the mid-20th century, philosopher Edmund Gettier published a famous 1963 paper demonstrating that JTB might not always be sufficient. Gettier showed that a person can have a justified true belief purely through epistemic luck (such as looking at a broken clock that happens to show the exact right time by coincidence). This realization spurred modern philosophers to refine the model, adding conditions like "no false premises" or "properly functioning faculties." Yet, JTB remains the foundational baseline against which all modern theories of knowledge are measure

The Justified True Belief account separates genuine knowledge from blind prejudice, wishful thinking, and fortunate guesses. By establishing that truth must be grounded in objective reality, embraced by the mind, and anchored by sound evidence, JTB provides a rigorous standard for human understanding. In a world full of rapid assertions and noisy opinions, JTB reminds us that before we claim to know something, we must be able to demonstrate that our belief corresponds with reality. It must rest on evidence that stands up to scrutiny.

The Consensus of the Experts Say.....

Dismantling the Expert Consensus Fallacy

Introduction 

In modern debate, few phrases are deployed with more conversational finality than "the consensus of experts agrees." Whether the topic is economics, dietary guidelines, historical analysis, or climate policy, citing a overwhelming percentage of professionals is frequently treated as an intellectual checkmate. But invoking a consensus is not an argument - it is a sociological head count. Science and critical thought are not democratic enterprises decided by a majority vote; they are rigorous methods grounded in verifiable data, testable hypotheses, and reproducible results. When consensus replaces evidence, inquiry stops and dogma begins.

Let's consider a centuries-old guild of navigators where 97% of the master cartographers agree that the earth ends at a sheer drop just beyond the horizon. They hold prestigious chairs, peer-review one another’s charts, and dismiss anyone who suggests otherwise as reckless. A lone sailor sails past the supposed edge, maps the new coastline, and returns with physical timber, foreign fruit, and soundings from the open sea.

Does the 97% consensus make the edge real? Or does a single physical measurement from one person overturn every chart the guild ever drafted? In true discovery, the physical world always casts the deciding vote, no matter how many credentials are lined up on the other side.

This analogy exposes the fundamental flaw of substituting consensus for empirical evidence. The guild’s 97% agreement was an artifact of shared assumptions and institutional momentum, not physical reality. In the same way, modern appeals to "what the experts agree on" often mistake a headcount for truth or a reasonable conclusion. When someone tells you an issue is settled because 97% of specialists hold a given position, they are asking you to trust the guild's chart instead of examining the sailor’s evidence.

Take, for instance, how this plays out in modern discourse...

Do a Google search for the term “global warming consensus” and you’ll find one of the first link is to this NASA webpage with the title “Scientific Consensus” and the following statement:

Multiple studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals show that 97 percent or more of actively publishing climate scientists agree: Climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities. In addition, most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position.

Note: this isn't a discussion about global warming, but the misuse of the "Consensus of the Experts" in discussions.

Here’s what Michael Crichton had to say about “scientific consensus” back in 2003 when he gave a lecture at the California Institute of Technology titled “Aliens Cause Global Warming”:

I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.

Let’s be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus. There is no such thing as consensus science. If it’s consensus, it isn’t science. If it’s science, it isn’t consensus. 

In addition, let me remind you that the track record of the "consensus" is nothing to be proud of. Let’s review a few cases. In past centuries, the greatest killer of women was fever following childbirth. One woman in six died of this fever. In 1795, Alexander Gordon of Aberdeen suggested that the fevers were infectious processes, and he was able to cure them. The consensus said no.

In 1843, Oliver Wendell Holmes claimed puerperal fever was contagious, and presented compelling evidence. The consensus said no.

In 1849, Semmelweiss demonstrated that sanitary techniques virtually eliminated puerperal fever in hospitals under his management. The consensus said he was a Jew, ignored him, and dismissed him from his post. There was in fact no agreement on puerperal fever until the start of the twentieth century. Thus, the consensus took one hundred and twenty-five years to arrive at the right conclusion despite the efforts of the prominent “skeptics” around the world, skeptics who were demeaned and ignored. And despite the constant, ongoing deaths of women.

There is no shortage of other examples. In the 1920s in America, tens of thousands of people, mostly poor, were dying of a disease called pellagra. The consensus of scientists said it was infectious, and what was necessary was to find the “pellagra germ.” The US government asked a brilliant young investigator, Dr. Joseph Goldberger, to find the cause. Goldberger concluded that diet was the crucial factor. The consensus remained wedded to the germ theory.

Goldberger demonstrated that he could induce the disease through diet. He demonstrated that the disease was not infectious by injecting the blood of a pellagra patient into himself, and his assistant. They and other volunteers swabbed their noses with swabs from pellagra patients, and swallowed capsules containing scabs from pellagra rashes in what were called “Goldberger’s filth parties.” Nobody contracted pellagra.

The consensus continued to disagree with him. There was, in addition, a social factor-southern States disliked the idea of poor diet as the cause, because it meant that social reform was required. They continued to deny it until the 1920s. Result-despite a twentieth century epidemic, the consensus took years to see the light.

Probably every schoolchild notices that South America and Africa seem to fit together rather snugly, and Alfred Wegener proposed, in 1912, that the continents had in fact drifted apart. The consensus sneered at continental drift for fifty years. The theory was most vigorously denied by the great names of geology-until 1961, when it began to seem as if the sea floors were spreading. The result: it took the consensus fifty years to acknowledge what any schoolchild sees.

And shall we go on? The examples can be multiplied endlessly. Jenner and smallpox, Pasteur and germ theory. Saccharine, margarine, repressed memory, fiber and colon cancer, hormone replacement therapy. The list of consensus errors goes on and on.

Finally, I would remind you to notice where the claim of consensus is invoked. Consensus is invoked only in situations where the science is not solid enough. Nobody says the consensus of scientists agrees that E=mc2. Nobody says the consensus is that the sun is 93 million miles away. It would never occur to anyone to speak that way.

The notion of a monolithic “science,” meaning what scientists say, is pernicious and the notion of “scientific consensus” actively so. The route to knowledge is transparency in disagreement and openness in debate. The route to truth is the pluralist expression of conflicting views in which, often not as quickly as we might like, good ideas drive out bad. Conclusion 

Consensus can inform public policy or coordinate institutional resources, but it has zero power over the laws of nature. Truth does not yield to a show of hands. Whenever the appeal to expert agreement is used as a shield to shut down debate or bypass data, skepticism of the consensus is not just justified - it is an intellectual duty. Don't settle for counting heads; follow the evidence, examine the primary data, and let the argument lead wherever the facts fall.

Dismantling the Common Objections

  • Objection A: "You are advocating for science denial."

    • Reply: No, this is an advocacy for critical thinking. Merely chanting "the consensus of experts agrees" is not critical analysis—it is dogmatic deference. Don’t blindly follow declarations; educate yourself, test the data, and follow the argument wherever it leads.

  • Objection B: "What are the experts basing their opinions on?"

    • Reply: That is precisely the point. If you understand the underlying evidence they are using, present that evidence directly. You should never have to retreat to the Fallacy of Consensus if the underlying facts stand on their own.

  • Objection C: "I would rather side with the majority of experts than the minority."

    • Reply: Siding with raw headcounts rather than examining reasons is an intellectual surrender. Truth is not determined by democratic vote.

  • Objection D: "As a layman, consensus serves as proxy evidence because I cannot evaluate the data myself."

    • Reply: If you lack the ability or willingness to evaluate the subject matter, the intellectually honest stance is to admit you are taking an authority's word on faith, not that the claim has been proven true to you by evidence.

  • Objection E: "Let's argue the actual climate data then [e.g., citing the IPCC report] instead of using consensus to justify skepticism."

    • Reply: This completely misses the thesis. This post is not a debate over climate models; it is a critique of the rhetorical misuse of "consensus" as an intellectual silencer in place of argumentation.

  • Objection F: "Experts reached consensus by arguing the data and following evidence, so why distrust them?"

    • Reply: Trust must be earned through transparent demonstration, not assumed. "Argue the data and follow the evidence" means verifying the experts' claims rather than taking their conclusions as unquestionable dogma.

  • Objection G: "When the consensus has been wrong in the past, it was overturned only by new data."

    • Reply: Or it was overturned by a superior, more coherent explanation of the existing data. Regardless, citing a consensus is not citing data. If you understand why the experts hold position X, make their argument rather than pointing to their numbers.

  • Objection H: "Then should we dismiss anything that more than three scholars agree on?"

    • Reply: No one suggested dismissing scholars out of hand. The challenge is to dig past their names and engage with their actual arguments and primary sources.

  • Objection I: "Consensus isn't the evidence itself; it reflects why they agree. Experts say it’s true because of XYZ, not because of agreement."

    • Reply: In principle, yes—but in practice, many commentators simply cite the consensus without examining the "XYZ." They bypass critical evaluation entirely and use the headcount as an unassailable shield.

  • Objection J: "If you didn't want to be called a science or climate denier, you shouldn't have used that example."

    • Reply: Using a prominent, universally recognized example of consensus rhetoric tests whether readers can distinguish between an epistemological critique and a topical disagreement. The immediate rush to label the author proves how quickly consensus language is weaponized to stifle discussion.

  • Objection K: "This just sounds like an excuse to dismiss consensus without doing the hard academic work to challenge it."

    • Reply: The exact opposite has been argued: do not blindly follow any authority. Do the homework, examine the evidence, and evaluate the claims rigorously.

  • Objection L: "Consensus is valid proxy evidence for a layman, lest we discard expertise and fall victim to the Dunning-Kruger effect."

    • Reply: If you possess and understand the evidence, consensus is superfluous. Furthermore, dismissing critical scrutiny by slapping an opponent with the "Dunning-Kruger" label is not an argument—it is an ad hominem evasion designed to avoid defending the data.
